DAVID "Hollywood Six" POWELL
David L. Powell photo index page
Dave Powell, known affectionately by the Warriors of Hill 881S as "Hollywood Six", died on 8 November, 2021, less than a month before his 80 th birthday. Dave was a civilian who left his ship as a merchant mariner and became a free lance photographer for United Press International. He talked his way onto an HMM-262 helicopter, and arrived on the Hill unannounced. At a time when even most of our Marine commanders were unwilling to take the risk of visiting the Hill, the arrival of a civilian tourist was quite surprising. Our Marines looked after Dave as he took the photographs that have become fixtures on our web site.
After Dave left the Hill, we saw a newspaper article he wrote about us, but then lost contact with him. Many years later, Tom Esslinger received an email from "pixwellex" saying he had photos of us on the Hill. Very soon we posted many excellent photos taken by Dave with his trusty Minolta camera. They are among the most valued posts on the site. Dave attended a few of our reunions, and we convinced him that he belonged among us. He will be missed.
