PFC. Daniel J. "Stretch" McCready
I was just a radioman assigned to H&S/3/26 Communication Platoon.  I was on Hill 881S with Cpl. Terry Lee Smith, he was teaching me how to do air strikes and medical evacuations. When he was killed I went back to the Khe Sanh Combat Base and stood radio watch in the Combat Information Center. Went back on the Hill for the April 1968 assault on Hill 881N  as Maj. Matthew P.  Caulfied's radio operator.  After that I floated around filling in with different companies then was assigned to India's mortars during May '68  Stayed with India mortars from then until after Meade River when I was transferred to 1st Engineers Bn, stayed with them until I rotated home. No Purple Heart nor outstanding awards, one of the lucky ones I guess. Not too much to tell except meeting SSgt. Karl Gorman Taylor on the Hill and finding out he only lived about 15 miles from me. We became friends, we talked about drag racing, he wanted a GTO I wanted a Road Runner and every time we would see each other we talked about who was going to blow who off the road. He was a very good man and an excellent Marine role model. I wish he was here.  That's my so called Vietnam biographical sketch.
