2ndLt. Michael H. Thomas on patrol in December 1967.  Lt. Thomas was killed on 20 January 1968 during combat operations which immediately preceded the Siege of Khe Sanh.  His Navy Cross citation can be read here.

The uncovered Marine is one of Capt. Dabney's radio operators.  The vewing device or scope was called a BC Scope.

After a few days on Hill 881S it was apparent that the Inspector General of the Division was not expected to visit the hill.  From 20 January on there was no safe time for policing the hill.
