The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the BRONZE STAR MEDAL to SECOND LIEUTENANT CHARLES J. SCHNEIDER, JR. UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS for service as set forth in the following CITATION: "For heroic achievement in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam while serving as Artillery Forward Observer of Company I, Third Battalion, Twenty-Sixth Marines, Third Marine Division. On 19 January 1968, Second Lieutenant SCHNEIDER was accompanying two squads conducting a patrol in the vicinity of Hill 881 North near Khe Sanh. Suddenly the Marines came under intensive fire from a large North Vietnamese Army force located on a nearby ridge line and were pinned down, sustaining several casualties. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, Second Lieutenant SCHNEIDER rushed forward across the fire-swept terrain to the lead element and began to adjust accurate artillery and mortar fire on the hostile positions. Fearlessly exposing himself to the heavy enemy fire in order to observe the target, he continued to adjust supporting arms fire to within thirty meters of the friendly unit, enabling the Marines to evacuate their wounded and move to a more secure position. On the following day, when elements of Company I became heavily engaged with the enemy in the area of the previous contact, Second Lieutenant SCHNEIDER again adjusted accurate mortar and artillery fire on the North Vietnamese emplacements, enabling the Marines to maneuver to more advantageous positions. Due largely to his determined efforts, the enemy force was defeated and minimal casualties were sustained by his company. Second Lieutenant SCHNEIDER's courage, aggressive fighting spirit and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of great personal danger inspired all who observed him and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service." Second Lieutenant SCHNEIDER is authorized to wear the Combat "V". FOR THE PRESIDENT /s/ H. W. Buse, Jr. H. W. BUSE, JR.
