The Secretary of the
Navy takes pleasure in
presenting the
STAFF SERGEANT JOSEPH M. JONES UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS for outstanding achievement in the superior performance of his duties in the field of leadership achievement as set forth in the following CITATION: "While serving with the First Marine Division in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam from 23 Decem- ber 1967 to 9 January 1969, Staff Sergeant Jones performed his duties in an exemplary manner. Initially assigned as a Platoon Sergeant with Company I, Third Battalion, Twenty-Sixth Marines, he displayed outstanding leadership and initiative despite extremely adverse conditions and difficulties of a combat environment. Distinguishing himself by his consistently high level of efficiency, he materially enhanced the operational effectiveness and combat readiness of his unit. Participating in Operations Nicollet Bay and Mameluke Thrust, he repeat- edly distinguished himself by his courage and composure under fire. Constantly concerned for the combat readiness of his unit, he tirelessly trained his men and molded them into an effective fighting force. Reassigned on 12 December 1968 as Assistant Operations Chief with the Seventh Marines, he continued to dis- tinguish himself by his outstanding performance of duty. As a result of his diligence and seemingly unlimited resourcefulness, he gained the respect and admiration of all who observed him and contributed significantly to the accomplishment of his unit's mission. Staff Sergeant Jones' leadership, out- standing professional ability and steadfast devotion to duty reflect credit upon himself, the Marine Corps and the Naval Service Staff Sergeant Jones is authorized to wear the Combat "V".
