The Bronze Star


 

                  The  President of the United States  takes  pleasure  in presenting  the   BRONZE STAR MEDAL posthumously to

Second Lieutenant William Resor AMMON

UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS

for service as set forth in the following:

CITATION:

                                

"For meritorious service in connection with operations the enemy while serving as a Platoon Commander with Company M, Third Battalion, Twenty Sixth Marines, Third Marine Division from 19 January to 16 April 1968 Throughout this period, Second Lieutenant AMMON displayed outstanding leader-ship and superior professionalism In the performance of his duties. Although subjected to almost, continuous enemy rocket, mortar and artillery while occupying a defensive position on Hill 881 South near Khe Sanh, he provided his men with the direction and control necessary to maintain an effective fighting force. Due to hostile fire, resupply operations to his position were restricted and on numerous occasions were impossible to accomplish. Despite the adverse conditions, he was able to maintain a high level of morale among his men and repeatedly exposed himself to hostile fire to ensure the equitable distribution of food, water and ammunition. His tireless efforts and sincere concern for the welfare of his men were an Inspiration to all who served with him and contributed significantly to the accomplishment of his unit's mission. On 16 April, he was killed during an enemy rocket attack.
Second Lieutenant AMMON's steadfast courage, inspiring leadership and unwavering devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service."
