UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS Awarded the REPUBLIC OF VIETNAM GALLANTRY CROSS For service as set forth in the following: For heroism and extraordinary achievement as a Flight Leader serving with Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 364 on 4 March 1966. Major Cable was tasked to carry an emergency supply of ammunition to Army of the Republic of Vietnam troops who were heavily engaged in a fire fight with the Viet Cong and running out of ammunition. Realizing that the zone was insecure, Major Cable continued the approach while under .50 caliber machine gun and 81 mm mortar fire. Making a landing approach with no lights, he went into an area surrounded by trees and enemy fire and successfully located the Vietnamese troops and delivered the ammunition. Besides that, he took seven critically wounded soldiers aboard his helicopter and delivered them to the Quang Ngai Hospital, resulting in the saving of lives, both the wounded and those who were running out of ammunition. His courage and selfless action was in keeping with the highest tradition of the United States Naval Service. Webmaster's note: This is not a reproduction of the original citation. It has been constructed from information printed in the Valley Courier of Lockland, Ohio shortly after Major Cable was killed in the training accident in 1968. |
