Aerial of the Da Nang Flight Line

The US Air Force and South Vietnamese Air Force used this end of the base for their operations. There were T-28s, A1-Es, L-19s, DC-3s, C-123s, and C-119s.  Da Nang and the bay are in the background.  The mountain coming out of the water was where Highway 1 went through the Hai-Van pass and proceeded north to Hue and Quang Tri.

Their facilities were a lot more modern than ours.  This is where we crashed the USO show and our officers had their difficulties with the Air Force Officers Club. They actually had a PX where we used our booze and cigarette ration cards.  As I remember, you could get 2 cartons of cigarettes, 2 bottles of hard liquor and 4 cases of beer a week.  I guess this is a standard Marine ration.  If you could get through this, the VC were a piece of cake.

This was the chopper end of the Da Nang airfield.  We shared this end with the
Army Dragons and Air Vietnam. Note the Marble Mountains in the background.
