I Received the Rose Garden
I Was Never Promised

To "The Troops",

You are the ones who earned the Navy Cross for "The Skipper" in 1968,
and you were the ones who made his receiving that award on April 15th
such a wonderful occasion.  To all of you who came or called or wrote to
say you would be here in spirit, our thanks.  Few men have the oppor- tunity to be so honored - and fewer still have the opportunity to share that moment with the men whom they know made it possible.  You are the ones who made the 15th of April such a perfect day.  Again, thank you.

The Marine Corps and my Marine "never promised me a rose garden",
but you gave me one in April.  I loved wearing your flowers and having
them in our home.  Both the corsage and the centerpiece were beautiful.
You shouldn't have sent them - but I'm so glad you did!

We now have another set of wonderful memories.  I think I finally
understand what it means when you say "we few, we happy few, we band of brothers....."  Then and now you have done so much for the skipper and his family.  My thanks.

Keep in touch.  Thanks for coming - and come back any time.
