STATE OF TENNESSEE
P R O C L A M A T I O N
BY THE GOVERNOR
WHEREAS, since the earliest
days of our nation, America's men and women have voluntarily answered the
call to duty. In each each of our country's conflicts, young men
and women have joined ranks, have endured extreme hardships and in many
cases paid the extreme sacrifice in the defense of American ideals; and
WHEREAS, it is right and fitting
that the citizens of the great State of Tennessee pause to honor one of
our very own who gave his life in the defense of this nation and to save
the lives of others; and
WHEREAS, all Tennesseans should
recognize the special debt we owe to our fellow citizens, who, in the act
of serving our nation, relinquished their lives so that we might enjoy
the blessings of peace and freedom; and
WHEREAS, the United States Marine
Corps has set September 30, 1988, as the date to designate a large physical
fitness facility at Arlington, Virginia, to one of Tennessee's bravest
and selfless sons;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ned McWherter,
as Governor of the State of Tennessee, do hereby proclaim September 30,
1988, as
THE LATE TERRY L. SMITH DAY
in Tennessee, and I urge all citizens to join me in
honoring his memory.
