1967 was a very good year, in that year a very special
group of people were about to graduate from High School. In a small
town, tucked deep within the mountains of Southern WV is located Scott
High School, a very special school. When I think back to Scott High
in 1967 I can remember talking with my friend Darrell Dunlap. Darrell
was one of Scott High's exceptional people. He was not the biggest
person in school, he was not the smallest but, pound for pound he was the
strongest. If one looked at Darrell you would say that Darrell reminds
me of Bruce Lee, the actor. Darrell was a great wrestler on a great
wrestling team, coached by one of the teachers that made Scott a special
school for young men and women. Darrell would starve for days to
get down to a low weight and then eat candy bars to gain strength before
a match. I never saw him lose a match, I only saw him win.
Our little town had two restaurants and each Friday and Saturday night
those with cars would drive between each of them, around and around.
Those without cars would hitch rides with those that had cars. One
weekend night, at one of the town restaurants, I was talking with Darrell
and telling him I had been rejected from the Air Force. Our town
had a long history of young men and women joining the military. Whenever
our country
needed people, we responded, with our best.
Darrell told me he was joining the US Marine Corps and he said, "I bet
the Marine would take you Sam". The Marines did take me but, while
I was on a slow road to Vietnam, Darrell was on a fast road. To me
it was like Darrell had gone into the Marines and directly to Vietnam,
the time was so short. I remember calling my father and him telling
me that Darrell had come home from Vietnam. Darrell was a leader
in High School and in everything he did. He was a happy person full
of encouragement for others. Darrell was a most exceptional person
from a special place. Sometimes God takes our best to be with him.
I know of no name more fitting than Darrell Dunlap to ride on the Stardust
spacecraft.
