The President of the United States
takes pleasure in presenting the
CORPORAL MARVIN C. BROWN UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS for service as set forth in the following CITATION: "For heroic achievement in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam while serving as a Radio Operator with Company I, Third Battalion, Twenty-Sixth Marines, Third Marine Division. On 20 January 1968, Corporeal BROWN was participating in a company attack on Hill 881 North when the unit was attacked by an estimated battalion of North Vietnamese Army Regulars and sustained numerous casualties. While evacuation teams withdrew to a landing zone with the casualties, Corporal BROWN cour- ageously remained in his forward position exposed to intense enemy fire and provided covering fire for his companions. As the forward elements advanced and sustained numerous additional casualties, he realized that another landing zone was needed. Despite enemy rounds impacting all around him, Corporal Brown located a suitable extraction site, skillfully directed a medical evacuation helicopter to a landing and organized other Marines in the area to provide covering fire for the casualties. While the wounded were being embarked aboard the aircraft, he called in and directed accurate supporting fire on enemy posi- tions and remained in the hazardous landing zone until all casualties were safely evacuated. His determined and heroic actions inspired all who observed him and contributed significantly to the accomplishment of his unit's mission. Corporal BROWN's superior professional skill, bold initiative and selfless devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service." Corporal BROWN is authorized to wear the Combat "V".
