The President of the United States takes pride in presenting the AIR MEDAL (Bronze Star for the First Award) posthumously to
HOSPITALMAN GARY NORMAN YOUNG
UNITED STATES NAVY
for service as set forth in the following
"For heroic achievement in aerial flight while serving as a Corpsman with Marine Air Base Sixteen, Marine Aircraft Group Sixteen, First Marine Aircraft Wing in connection with operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 7 February 1969, Hospitalman Young launched aboard a CH-46 transport helicopter assigned a medical evacuation mission southwest of DaNang in Quang Nam Province. Arriving over the designated area, the aircraft immediately came under intense enemy fire and sustained several hits. During the approach to the landing zone, he was mortally wounded when the CH-46 crashed as a result of the heavy volume of hostile ground fire. Hospitalman Young's courage, bold initiative and selfless devotion to duty earned the respect and admiration of all who served with him and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service."
