The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the AIR MEDAL (Bronze Star for the First Award) LIEUTENANT COLONEL CHARLES R. DUNBAUGH UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS for service as set forth in the following CITATION: "For heroic achievement in aerial flight while serving as Commanding Officer of Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 364, Marine Aircraft Group Sixteen, First Marine Aircraft Wing in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 19 August 1969, Lieutenant Colonel Dunbaugh launched as Aircraft Commander of a CH-46 transport helicopter assigned the mission of medically evacuating several woun- ded Marines from an area northwest of An Hoa in Quang Nam Province. Arriving over the designated location, he was approaching the landing zone when the enemy delivered intense rocket, mortar, and rocket-propelled grenade fire which temporarily obliterated the site. Aware now that he would probably come under fire, Lieutenant Colonel Dunbaugh nevertheless determined to evacuate the seriously wounded men and commenced a second approach. After he landed the aircraft, the hostile soldiers unleashed another volley of fire at the zone, but he steadfastly remained in his dangerously exposed position until the casualties were all embarked. Displaying superior airmanship, he then skillfully utilized natural terrain to mask his approach to a second nearby zone which was also taking a heavy volume of fire. With complete disregard for the enemy rounds impacting around the zone, he landed safely and calmly waited until the additional wounded men were taken aboard before expeditiously departing the hazardous area for the medical facility at the An Hoa Combat Base. His heroic and determined actions inspired all who observed him and were instrumental in saving the lives of several fellow Marines. Lieutenant Colonel Dunbaugh's courage, superior aeronautical ability, and unwavering devotion to duty at great personal risk were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service."
