13 February 1969 Statement of R.S. PLASTERER, MAJ. USMC concerning outstanding performance
of duty by Spooky 11, night of 12 February 1969 during emergency medevac 58 from Ham Salad 14A.
12 February 1969 I was flight leader of Comprise 9-0 and 9-2 gunship standby for night medevac. At approximately 2130 a call was received for emergency medevac 58. During the brief, word was received that the LZ was unsecure with small arms and automatic weapons fire from the northeast and west. Swift Medevac and chase proceeded to the area with Comprise flight. Spooky 11 was contacted along with Ham Salad 14A at approximately the BT 013580, who gave us a zone brief while Spooky 11 continued to lay accurate fire 200-250 meters to the north/northeast of the pickup sight using flares to spot the hostile enemy positions. Swift Medevac attempted an approach into the LZ from the southeast with lights out. Spooky had to stop firing as no flares were being usedduring the actual pickup. Swift Medevac came under heavy enemy automatic weapons fire including .50 caliber from the northeast and small arms from the west. He immedialtely waved off and Spooky was called back to continue working over the area. Further liaison was made with Spooky 11 as to his firing with no flares so that the emergency medevac could be picked up. He immediately consented to try dropping a land flare on the hostile enemy position if possible. With deadly accuracy a land flare was placed in the exact spot of the enemy .50 caliber and automatic weapons positions. Flying at 3000' within range of the .50 caliber he unhesitantly took the position under extreme deadly accurate fire while Comprise flight suppressed the small arms to the west. Swift Medevac under the total dark conditions was able to successfully complete the emergency medevac. This medevac would not have been completed without the superior airmanship , unswerving courage and outstanding professionalism displayed by Spooky 11 in the direct face of heavy enemy automatic weapons fire and .50 caliber fire. Spooky 11 and crew are recommended for the highest possible award for their outstanding performance of duty in the direct face of hostile enemy heavy automatic weapons and .50 caliber fire.
