After several unfortunate incidents with YK-13, LtCol.
Statzer finally decided the aircraft should not bear that number upon repairing
it. Therefore, the Marines in the Metal Shop gave her the number
12 7/8.

By the color of this crew chief/gunner's helmet, there
was no question of which organization Cpl. Bandish was working for.
Cpl. Bandish relates, "Everyone thought I was crazy for the purple helmet,
as it was very easy to see. However, it appeared the VC had a tendency
to hit everything but what they were shooting at. Therefore, I considered
the purple helmet a good idea."x

This photo was taken in mid '68. It shows the
taxi-way where the Purple Foxes began operations in Nov. '68, just to the
right of the terminal area. We had to use a Ford tractor and/or six-by
to pull the Phrogs from the mud just off the taxi-way. At the time
of this photo, our squadron area was out of the frame to the left toward
the end of the runway.
