The Bronze Star


 

                  The  President of the United States  takes  pleasure  in presenting  the   BRONZE STAR MEDAL to

MAJOR JOHN ALFRED CHANCEY

UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS

for service as set forth in the following

                 CITATION:

                               "For  meritorious service  in connection  with  combat oper- ations  against  insurgent  communist  (Viet Cong)  forces   in  the  Republic  of Vietnam  while  serving in various  capacities  with  Marine  Medium  Helicopter Squadron 364,  Marine Aircraft  Group Thirty-Six,  First  Marine Aircraft  Wing from  30   October  1967  to   11  May  1968.    Throughout  this  period,   Major CHANCEY performed his demanding duties in an exemplary manner.  Although assigned  the  primary  duties  of  squadron  pilot,   Major   CHANCEY,  then  a Captain,  served  concurrently  as Training Officer  and skillfully  supervised the training of pilots and flight crews in preparation for the unit's deployment to the Republic  of  Vietnam.    Demonstrating   outstanding   professional  ability  and resourcefulness,  he  ensured  that all personnel  received adequate  weapons and survival  training.   Upon arrival in the  Republic of Vietnam,  he ws  assigned as Assistant  Operations  Officer  and ably  supervised  the myriad  functions of his section.  Utilizing  his  vast  experience, he  was  instrumental in  formulating the operating  procedures and  tactical  formations  used by  the squadron.   Largely due to his  superior professionalism and  resolute determination,  he contributed significantly to the expeditious and efficient transition of  his squadron from the UH-34  helicopter to the  CH-46 aircraft.   Subsequently  reassigned as  Logistics Officer in February 1968, he continued to distinguish himself in the performance of his duties.   Working  tirelessly  and  with  meticulous  attention  to  detail, he consistently provided  his squadron with  outstanding logistical support.   Major CHANCEY's professionalism, tireless initiative and unwavering devotion to duty throughout  contributed  immeasurably  to  the   accomplishment  of  his   unit's mission and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service."

Major CHANCEY is authorized to wear the Combat "V".
