UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS Awarded the REPUBLIC OF VIETNAM GALLANTRY CROSS For service as set forth in the following: For heroism and extraordinary achievement as a Flight Leader serving with Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 364 on 17 November 1965. Captain Doane flew as Section Leader in a troop lift operation in support of an Army of the Republic of Vietnam outpost that had been overrun by insurgent guerrilla forces (Viet Cong). The operation was conducted against the extremely well deployed and well armed anti-aircraft unit that brought the fire of many heavy automatic weapons to bear upon the landing zone. Exercising skillful judgment, iron determination and dis- playing superior aeronautical skill, Captain Doane repeatedly landed into the landing zone while under fire and in marginal weather conditions of low ceiling and reduced visibility due to rain showers. Captain Doane's Division Leader was forced to discontinue the flight due to serious dam- age to his aircraft from hostile fire, Captain Doane assumed command of the division and continued the flight. On the sixth approach into the landing zone, Captain Doane's aircraft again came under heavy hostile fire. His aircraft was severely damaged, Captain Doane using all the skill at his command, flew to a safe area, thus saving the aircraft and crew from possible capture. His courage and selfless action was in keeping with
the highest tradition of the United States Naval Service.
