HEADQUARTERS, FLEET MARINE FORCE, PACIFIC FPO, SAN FRANCISCO 96601
In the name of the President of the United States, the Commanding General Fleet Marine Force, Pacific takes pleasure in presenting the DISTINGUISHED FLYING CROSS to CAPTAIN EDWARD ROBERT DOANE UNTIED STATES MARINE CORPS for service as set forth in the following CITATION: "For heroism and extraordinary achievement as a FLIGHT LEADER serving with Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 364 on 18 November 1965. Captain DOANE flew as a section leader in a troop lift operation in support of the Army of the Republic of Vietnam outpost that had been overrun by insurgent communist guerilla forces (Viet Cong). The operation was conducted against an extremely well deployed and well armed anti- aircraft unit that brought the fire of many heavy automatic weapons to bear upon the landing zone. Exercising skillful judgment, iron determi- nation and displaying superior aeronautical skill, Captain DOANE made repeated approaches into the landing zone while under heavy fire and under marginal weather conditions of low ceilings and reduced visibility due to rain showers. When Captain DOANE's division leader was forced to dis- continue the flight due to serious damage to his aircraft from hostile fire, Captain DOANE assumed command of the division and continued the flight. On the third landing Captain DOANE's aircraft was severely damaged by heavy hostile fire. Captain DOANE, using all the skill at his command, flew to a safe area, thus saving the aircraft and crew from possible capture. By his courage and selfless action under continuos enemy fire and his professional skill Captain DOANE upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service." FOR THE PRESIDENT, /s/ V. H. Krulak V. H. KRULAK
